Bonnie’s Answers: Muslims & Islamophobia

How will you strengthen relationships and trust between police services and Muslim communities?

“

I believe building trust between police services and Muslim communities starts with mutual respect, open communication, and understanding. Through my relationships within the Muslim community and my understanding of police services, I would use my experience and connections to bring both sides closer together and encourage meaningful dialogue.

How will you work with mosques, Islamic schools, and Muslim organizations to improve community safety and emergency preparedness?

“

I would take a practical, proactive approach by working directly with mosques, Islamic schools, and Muslim organizations to identify their specific safety needs and help them access the right resources. This includes supporting them in identifying and applying for available government grants and funding for security cameras, access-control systems,

What steps will you take to address Islamophobia and anti-Muslim discrimination?

“

My position has always been clear: zero tolerance for intolerance, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate and discrimination. I believe leadership means standing up for people’s rights and dignity, not only when it is easy, but especially when it matters most. My personal record reflects my commitment to inclusion, mutual respect, and standing against

How will you ensure Muslim residents and community organizations have a meaningful voice in municipal decision-making?

“

I believe Muslim residents and community organizations must have a meaningful voice in the decisions that affect their lives. That is exactly why I took the initiative to create the Inclusion and Diversity Committee—to help ensure that diverse communities have a seat at the table, their concerns are heard, and their perspectives are considered in m

How will you support Muslim organizations that provide community services, settlement support, youth programming, food assistance, and other essential services?

“

I believe Muslim organizations play a vital role in supporting families, newcomers, youth, and vulnerable residents, and the services they provide benefit the entire community. I would work to ensure these organizations are better connected with the city, have access to available grants and funding opportunities, and receive support in navigating

How can the city provide a more nuanced approach to zoning for religious institutions (such as mosques) given their practices, cultures and needs differ?

“

I have always believed that everyone has the fundamental right to worship freely and practise their faith with dignity. Through my role in helping build the Meadowvale Islamic Centre and supporting permits for various religious institutions, I understand the challenges faith communities can face when navigating municipal processes.

What do you think is the greatest problem the ward is facing, and how do you plan to address it?

“

I believe one of the greatest challenges facing our city is keeping pace with its rapidly changing demographics while ensuring that resources, infrastructure, and services grow alongside our communities. Our city is becoming more diverse, but we need to ensure that public services, community facilities, and support programs keep up with these chang

How will you ensure that anti-racism and EDI policies explicitly recognize and address anti-Palestinian racism where it occurs?

“

I believe anti-racism and equity, diversity, and inclusion policies must address all forms of discrimination, including anti-Palestinian racism, wherever it occurs. Every resident deserves to feel respected, safe, and able to express their identity without fear of discrimination. I would work with community organizations and the City’s Inclusion.

How will you ensure that your city’s commitments to freedom of expression, anti-racism, religious freedom, and equal treatment are applied consistently across all communities, including when issues are politically contentious?

“

I believe that human rights, religious freedom, and equal treatment must never depend on someone’s background, faith, or political beliefs. My approach has always been guided by fairness, consistency, and the principle that there should be zero tolerance for racism and discrimination, regardless of which community is affected.

Are there any other priorities or topic you would like to add?

“

One priority I would like to emphasize is the importance of turning community engagement into meaningful action. Through my relationships across diverse communities and my experience working with local institutions, I understand that residents want more than promises; they want accessible leadership, practical solutions, and results they can see.
