George Trihenea’s Priority Issues

Citing affordability as a key issue, Trihenea would conduct an efficiency review at city hall to ensure residents are getting good value for their tax dollars. He pointed to regional government’s “reactive” response to the water capacity crisis as an example. “I feel that it’s costing us more right now … We could have taken a more proactive approach.” He vowed to bring more transparency and accountability to municipal decision-making. “If I were to be mayor, I’d own my mistakes.”

George’s Answers: Muslims & Islamophobia

How will you strengthen relationships and trust between police services and Muslim communities?

“

By constructive dialogue with our police services and the Muslim community. As a non incumbent mayor my goal is to listen, understand the issues that are most important to the community and work with the police services on best practices to better serve the community.

How will you work with mosques, Islamic schools, and Muslim organizations to improve community safety and emergency preparedness?

“

I am looking forward to meeting with community leaders to better understand stand how to best address safety issues. Everyone should feel welcome and safe in Kitchener. That is my goal!

What steps will you take to address Islamophobia and anti-Muslim discrimination?

“

Islamophobia has no place in Kitchener. I will partner with the Centre for Mutual Wellbeing’s Anti-Hate Services, train city staff, enforce bylaws against harassment, improve reporting with police, support January 29 remembrance, and back prevention programs so Muslim residents can live, work, and worship safely.

How will you ensure Muslim residents and community organizations have a meaningful voice in municipal decision-making?

“

By identifying the community leaders and giving them direct access to me. I would work closely with each leader on each issue deemed important. I am all about communication and making myself accessable to all kitchener residents.

How will you support Muslim organizations that provide community services, settlement support, youth programming, food assistance, and other essential services?

“

Again, as a non incumbent dialogue between leaders within the Muslim organizations and services is a main priority for me.

How can the city provide a more nuanced approach to zoning for religious institutions (such as mosques) given their practices, cultures and needs differ?

“

The City should treat all places of worship the same under zoning rules. At the same time, it can allow flexibility for different needs—like parking, traffic, or busy times—through early talks with staff and small adjustments. Neighbourhood concerns about noise or parking should be handled fairly, without blocking projects because of religion.

What do you think is the greatest problem the ward is facing, and how do you plan to address it?

How will you ensure that anti-racism and EDI policies explicitly recognize and address anti-Palestinian racism where it occurs?

“

As a father I stand with the Palestinian people and will advocate for a free Palestine.

How will you ensure that your city’s commitments to freedom of expression, anti-racism, religious freedom, and equal treatment are applied consistently across all communities, including when issues are politically contentious?

Are there any other priorities or topic you would like to add?
