Muslims & Islamophobia

As Mayor, I would work with Durham Regional Police and Muslim community leaders to strengthen trust through open dialogue, cultural awareness, youth engagement and better hate crime reporting. I believe every resident deserves to feel safe, respected and heard, and trust must be built through consistent action and accountability.

As Mayor, I would work closely with mosques, Islamic schools and Muslim organizations to strengthen emergency preparedness through safety training, clear communication and partnerships with police and emergency services. I would also ensure their concerns are heard and addressed so everyone feels safe and supported in our community.

As Mayor, I would work with Muslim community leaders, schools and local organizations to combat Islamophobia through education, awareness and stronger community engagement. I would also advocate for better hate crime reporting, accountability and support for victims. Discrimination has no place in Whitby, and everyone deserves to feel safe.

I will ensure Muslim residents and community organizations have a meaningful voice through regular community consultations, open dialogue with local mosques and organizations, and inclusive representation in municipal discussions. My commitment is to ensure every community is heard, respected, and genuinely involved in decisions that affect them.

I will support Muslim organizations by strengthening partnerships with the Town, improving access to municipal resources, and advocating for funding opportunities. These organizations play a vital role in our community, and I want to ensure they have the support needed to expand their services and continue making a positive impact.

I support a more flexible and inclusive approach to zoning that recognizes the unique needs of religious institutions, including prayer schedules, parking, accessibility, and community activities. I would work directly with faith communities to ensure zoning policies are fair, practical, and respectful of cultural and religious differences.

The biggest challenge is rising living costs and property taxes. I plan to attract new businesses, increase municipal revenue, and reduce unnecessary spending to ease the burden on residents.

I will advocate for EDI policies that explicitly recognize anti-Palestinian racism, consult with affected communities, and ensure clear reporting and accountability measures. Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and protected from discrimination.

I will ensure municipal policies are applied fairly and consistently to everyone, regardless of background, religion, or political views. I believe in protecting freedom of expression, addressing discrimination, and making decisions based on fairness, transparency, and equal rights, even when issues are controversial.
